Painted Scallops Ceramic Mug

For the seafood lover inside us, here’s a ceramic mug covered in colorful scallops and one lone flower. There’s something satisfying about making a repeating scallop pattern.

Using a slip trailer like a pen, the repetitive movement is almost meditative. Adding color to the tear-drop shapes is like creating a new abstract painting, finding the right balance of color to negative space. As you enjoy your favorite beverage, turn the mug around to take in all the different colors.

This is a collaborative piece: the ceramic mug was thrown by Thomas Graeper. I decorated the surface by painting a unique design on newsprint using underglazes, then pressing it onto the terracotta mug.

Dimensions:

• Each cups holds about 8 ounces.

• Diameter: 3”

• Height: 2.5”

• Width: 4.5” (including handle)

Hand built from a low-fire terracotta clay, all my ceramic products are handmade in small batches, often sold as one-of-a-kind pieces and may be perfectly, imperfect.
